Downtown Las Curces, the town of Mesilla, and New Mexico State University are each very walkable.  Once you drive and park at the noted starting point for each of these three areas, you can then easily walk from attraction to attraction to uncover the historic stories and architecture of each of these three distinct areas in the Las Cruces, New Mexico region.  The town of Mesilla sits adjacent to Las Cruces on the south side of the city.

Uncover how the town of Mesilla with its charming town square and collection of mud adobe structures that still retain their original character from the mid 1800s!  See New Mexico's oldest movie house, hear how the stagecoach traveled through Mesilla, and learn how they built the existing church structure over the old church structure - ohh, this is a good story...Plus, hear the story of the outlaw Billy the Kid, and learn of a political rally turn gunfight and who was running an illegal gambling game in the back room of one of the stores right along the main town plaza!  All of this and so much more!

In Downtown Las Cruces we learn the history of a historic old theatre, hear the tales of a historic adobe hotel, and visit Las Cruces first library, today a cultural center.  Hear how the arrival of the Railroad in Las Cruces, instead of Mesilla, propels Las Cruces forward to be the largest city in Southern New Mexico, and hear why Mesilla passes on having the railroad pass through it's town, which at the time the railroads arrival was the largests city in the area.  Stroll past this historic courthouse, and learn how the Camino Real, the royal road of New Spain, passed through the original Las Cruces town site and so much more!

We also visit New Mexico State University and learn that Henry Trost, the Famous Architect of the Southwest, designed the master plan for the University including several of the historic buildings.  Stroll through the charming New Mexico State University campus with its Spanish styled historic buildings, and hear the tales of how New Mexico State University was founded, and what the historic buildings have housed over the decades, including today.  Hear how one of the professors on campus discovered a dwarf planet we all are familiar with, and hear the tragic tale of how one professor accidentally electrocutes himself!  Hear the story of Pistol Pete, the New Mexico State University Aggies mascot, and learn the football and basketball history of the University.  Stroll past museums that you can visit and see public works of art!
