The first Sunday of November marks Tucson's annual All Souls Procession celebrating the Day of the Dead or El Dia de los Muertos. With nearly 200,000 participants and spectators Tucson's procession is the largest in the United States! In Mexican Culture it is believed that on the Day of the Dead the boundaries between life on earth and the spirit world dissipate with the souls of the dead returning to dance, eat and drink with their loved ones. During the All Souls Procession on El Dia de los Muertos, which is filled with music and dancing, the urn passes by where participants and on lookers fill it with slips of paper with their hopes and wishes! At the end of the procession the ceremonial burning of the urn takes place. It was a wonderful celebration and a uniquely Tucsonan evening. I highly encourage a visit to Tucson over El Dia de los Muertos!
