Learn how these mud adobe structures were built for our harsh desert climate and hear of the three styles of Sonoran Row Houses and what brings about each of these style changes! As we stroll the charming sidewalks of the Barrio Viejo we will discuss what life was historically like in the Barrio and how economic activity was mixed with residential life in this lively neighborhood.

Guests will hear the tales of individuals who lived in the Barrio as Scott, your tour guide, paints the picture for you of what life was like historically in the Barrio Viejo. Learn of Jewish Merchants, our Spanish speaking Mexican American community, our Chinese American community, our African American Community, a Lebanese dry cleaner, and more! This neighborhood has historically been a melting pot of cultures!


We will see charming corner parks, see the location of the El Ojito natural spring that used to bubble up out of the ground, and visit the El Tiradito Wishing Shrine to learn of Juan Oliveras and his sinful ways in the 1870s. Next we head to the Historic Pima County Courthouse, a beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival Styled Building, built in 1929 and designed by Roy Place, a locally distinguished architect. We do the Dillinger Experience where we visit the courtroom where the Dillinger Gang was arraigned in 1934, and Scott will share the fascinating story of how they were captured here in Tucson, including a few side stories!


Next we head past a memorial and stunning mid-century fountain, before arriving at a historic Gazebo Bandstand to learn of so many historic tales that take place here, including stories of old west gunfighters, our first cathedral and so much more! Then we stroll past a beautiful Southwest Art Deco Theater and Tucson's first Skyscraper. We end on Jacome Plaza to discuss in detail two of our Pioneering Merchant Families and the mid-century shopping scene they build that gains national acclaim - this is a great story of the grand ole days of downtown shopping!
